Hope you all are having a great day. A couple of weeks ago I was given the application TAWKON
to try out on my Blackberry. For those of you who don’t know the App its where it measures the levels of radiation on your phone. Given the articles that have recently been published about radiation and health risks I thought to give it a try. I have to admit that I was shocked at some levels of radiation just in my apartment, the application is also neat because as I was on a call the phone kept beeping to let me now that the level was high. I noticed at the Mall or at offices it was extremely high as well. The application also gives the user the option to switch to speaker or handset for calls as it is safer. When I went out of town during the drive, it kept beeping between green and red levels of radiation. I have to say that this application taught me alot about cell phone use and I was glad to see that my Blackberry 9700 is not among the top 20 for high levels. I would encourage all my readers to try out this application as it can be very important to your health.
RIM has finally released a Beta version of the Twitter for Blackberry® application (available for download at Blackberry App World).
I have had a unreleased version of the app for about a month now, so upon downloading the released Beta version, I wasn’t surprised by the features. The app looks similar to the web version of Twitter, which was appealing to me from the start. I have been a fan of Ubertwitter (”Uber”), and while the features are great, I haven’t been too keen about the interface. Uber has made reports a few months back that they are in the process of redesigning the interface. I’m eager to see how the new Uber interface will compare to the Twitter for Blackberry (”T4BB”) app.
The T4BB app has functioned well thus far and runs much smoother/seamlessly with BB. Currently, the app allows you to upload and ”tweet” pictures, search for other users, follow/unfollow/block users, view/create lists, as well as see the current and recent trending topics. The app also gives the user several options that users can set such as automatic refresh of new tweets, spell check, and font/font size.
As great as the app is, there are unfortunately a few cons:
Essare, LLC has developed a fantastic app for those that suffer from a bit of forgetfulness when it comes to their phone. “Where’s My Phone” (WMP) helps users find and recover their phone whether it was left behind in a taxi or lost underneath that pile of laundry on the bed. Users will never have to worry about misplacing their phone with this easy to use app.
WMP monitors the user’s email account (BlackBerry Internet Service or BlackBerry Enterprise Server) for a “code word” and ‘command” in the subject line of the email. The code word and command triggers an alarm and a message is displayed on the phone.
There is a free and a pro version of this app. With the pro version, users are able to do some of the following:
- Remotely trigger a loud alarm, even if your BlackBerry is on vibrate or silent mode!
- Display a message on the screen, telling the finder how to contact you. (The free version does not allow customization of this message. )
- Get your BlackBerry s location via GPS, emailed back to you on devices with GPS . (Only works if your BB has GPS. The free version allows you to test whether your phone is GPS capable. GPS function is capable with the pro version.)
- Have your BlackBerry call you at another number, so you can hear where it is.
- Check the battery level remotely. (Not available on the free version)
QuickLaunch is a must have app for every BlackBerry. A lot of people seem to think that RIM should make it default on all BlackBerry devices - so let’s take a look and see why.
Quick Launch from NikkiSoft allows you to make various shortcuts to task on your device including: websites, emails, applications, device options, wi-fi toggle, there is also the possibility to take screenshots directly from the app and many other useful options.
Configure a convenience key to activate QuickLaunch and when pushed a menu will popup showing a list of your configured actions which can be set to appear on the Right or Left side and can be shown on virtually any screen so you can perform any action without backing up and navigating through your homescreen and folders saving you time.
Once you start setting up QuickLaunch you realize how useful it is - the ability to have all you apps in one place and with the ease of just the click of a trackball or pad.
Have you ever dreaded doing a battery pull due to the annoying act of having to pull off your protective case and battery cover? Well, Steelthorn Software has developed a neat little application designed to give your phone a battery pull/reboot with just the the click of a button!
QuickPull reboots/restarts your phone by just simply clicking a button. I was overjoyed to discover this app and quickly downloaded it to watch the magic unfurl! First of all, the app is FREE! Although, there is paid version (QuickPull Pro) on BlackBerry AppWorld for $2.99. Once reading the descriptions for both, I couldn’t see any differences amongst the features besides the Pro coming with tech support. The app is only 96KB, so it’s very small and works by simply clicking the app to restart your phone. Here are some other features of the app as described on AppWorld:
*Simulates a “battery pull” equivalent reset
*Integrates with AutoStandby
*Advanced scheduling, run a QuickPull daily or on certain days of the week
*Memory monitoring
The free QP app has gotten about 2500+ reviews with a solid 3-star rating on BAW. The biggest complaint seems to come from those using various versions of the BB Curve. They’ve described the app as either not responsive or freezing their phone. Some of the Curve users have also mentioned that the phone lost all it’s settings once it rebooted. Those with various versions of the Bold and the Storm have not had any problems. I have the Bold 9700 and it works like a charm. I deleted two apps from my phone and instead of letting the phone reboot on it’s own, I used the QP app. It gave me it’s requisite “5 second warning” before rebooting. My phone restarted and everything works fine and all my settings are still in place.
Steelthorn does mention that this app is still in Beta testing for those with OS 5.0. Overall, I think it’s worth a download to see if will work for your phone. If not, you can always delete it!
