Punctuation Shortcuts for the BlackBerry Storm - Part 1

Posted on 9th March 2009 under BlackBerry Tips and Tricks by Kara

I’ve become pretty fast at typing on my BlackBerry Storm keyboard in portrait mode using SureType, but I found that punctuation was really slowing me down.  Creating some short cuts allowed me to significantly reduce my thumb travel and increase typing speed.  You can create short cuts using your AutoText function:

Options > AutoText > BlackBerry Button > New

Replace:

n

With:

%b,

BlackBerry Button > Save

auto

Now when you type the sequence:

Space Bar n Space Bar

You will get a comma.  For example if you want a sentence to look like this:

So, do you want to have lunch later?

Type:

So Space Bar n Space Bar do you want to have lunch later?

While this doesn’t cut down on the number of necessary clicks, you will notice a significant reduction in time and the distance your thumbs have to move compared to hitting the “!?123″ button to switch to a different screen and then the “,” button.

Some other short cuts I’ve created are:

? - Replace “m” with %b?

! - Replace “c” with %b!

The reason I chose the letters N, M and C are because I almost exclusively use the SureType keyboard and these three keys are closest to the space bar.  Also in SureType, if you hit the “CV” key, the first letter to come up is C.  However, if you type mainly in Landscape (full QWERTY) mode you may want to assign different letter short cuts like B or V as they will be a little closer to the space bar.  There are all sorts of possibilities once you start experimenting with combinations in your AutoText!

Give these punctuation short cuts a try and let us know what you think.  And tell us about any others that you come up with on our BlackBerryChick Forum.

Stay tuned for Part 2 which will include a video demonstration along with some other tips for typing on your BlackBerry Storm keyboard.

I Don’t Have An Option To Sync With Outlook 2003?!?!?!

Posted on 4th February 2009 under BlackBerry 101, BlackBerry Tips and Tricks by BlackBerryGuy

ihaznosync

This is a question that we are hearing more and more with the new Desktop Managers which are coming on the CD included with new BlackBerry devices.

If you happen to have loaded Desktop Manager on your computer recently then have gone in to set up your sync preferences, but notice that Outlook isn’t an option, you know exactly what we are talking about…

Here is the fix…

For some unknown reason, the new versions of Desktop Manager will NOT sync with Outlook 2003 (according to a few RIM reps, this is because “not many people use Outlook 2003 anymore, so we aren’t supporting it in new Desktop Manager builds” And that folks, is a DIRECT quote). But oh, are they wrong. Millions of people still use Outlook 2003…If it’s not broke, don’t fix (pay to upgrade to 2007) right? (more…)
